CineStill 800T at Night
CineStill 800T is a tungsten balanced colored film. It is essentially motion picture film that was converted to be able to be processed in C-41 chemistry. It is ideal for shooting at night and in low-light situation and this is exactly what I did.
I have seen photos of CineStill 800T used at night and I really love them. At night, it just seems to capture the color the way you see it, especially with city lights. I also like the 'halation' effect you get with red-ish light sources. I believe is due to the removal of the remjet backing (I hope I am saying this right) which in turn, makes it safe to process like any other negative color film.
Shooting in China Town, Manhattan
I decided to try out shooting along Canal Street and the streets around China Town in Manhattan. I didn't want a place that was too busy with people, I chose to shoot during a colder night and on a random week day to avoid too many people. This was for me a practice to see the results of this film and to see how feasible it was to shoot around this city.
I am pretty happy with the results. I shot with my Mamiya 7II and just with my 80mm lens. I used the meter in my camera mainly (it kind of works as a spot meter) and metered for the highlights to make sure I didn't blow anything out. I rated the film at 1600 ISO, shot at f4, and my shutter speed was between 1/125th to a 1/30th of a second.
The film is great. Works really nicely in low-light scenarios. I have a lot of confidence shooting with this film now and I am loving the results. I hope to make this another continuing series. I plan on going around the city at night, look for interesting lighting situations and hoping that the results come out great.
